2x2 is a public interactive installation that investigates the shift towards web-based public spaces such as MySpace, Friendster and Second Life. What happens when geometrical space collapses while our social connections amplify? In attempting to answer these questions we have built an installation that situates the psychology of online social networks into the physical world.
The artwork consists of two components: a vertical board placed in a public space to gather messages and a series of large-scale photographic compositions of the resulting messages.
This work was developed and exhibited at the Banff Centre for the Arts during the recent conceptual art residency: The Future of Idea Art. We are planning this as an ongoing series of public art installations to materialize the psychology of online exchange.
